Engine DJ/OS

The apps you need:

  • Denon Conversion Utility (DeCU)
  • iTunes Rekordbox Collection Backup Tool (CBT) part of the DeCU distribution
  • Engine DJ, free to download from the Denon DJ site.

Test the conversion before you invest in Prime hardware

The result of this conversion is a USB drive that connects to the Prime hardware. No additional steps such as packing and analyzing are required! The USB drive you connect to the Prime hardware is the same drive you connect to your computer for use with the Engine DJ software. Playlists, crates, cues, loops: everything is (and looks) the same in Engine DJ as it does on the Prime hardware. Test that your carefully curated collection converts to Engine DJ perfectly before putting down the big bucks to buy the Prime hardware.

What is converted?

DeCU will create the folder/playlist structure from an iTunes collection in Engine DJ. The big difference with Engine DJ's iTunes integration is that DeCU can do this incremental on any combination of playlists/folders,  instead of a complete collection only.
The procedure also avoids the problem with tracks stored in non Engine DJ compatible locations (file servers, cloud drives etc).

This is currently the only method to update metadata, including comments, artwork and star ratings  for tracks already part of an Engine DJ collection.

You are in control

Select what combination of folders/playlists needs to be converted:

  • A few singled out playlists containing a few hundred tracks which is converted in under a minute when emergency strikes
  • Complex selections of both folders and playlists after the spring cleaning of your collection
  • Entire collection of thousands of tracks

Works with other conversions

If you use Serato, Traktor, Virtual DJ or Rekordbox as your preparation platform, to set cues loops etc.

And you use iTunes as your collection manager (=creating playlist, basic tag editing etc).

This procedure can be combined with a procredure where the DJ metadata is converted by one workflow, and the playlists etc are created using this procedure.

Only requirement is that the filepaths to the track's media files is identical in both your DJ software and iTunes/Music.app.
See my workflow Fall 2020 video how I combine this with the Traktor to Rekordbox to Engine DJ conversion.

I fully understand this is a bit harder to wrap your head around than your run of the mill "pushing a button conversion". Don't let that scare you away, it's not complicated and you don't need advanced technical skills. The quality of the conversion is superior, completer, way faster and more efficient than any other solution out there.
